The Beginning of the WHYs
Scenario: I am in the kitchen, preparing the ingredients to make spaghetti olio for breakfast (don't ask why we're having pasta for breakfast... that's another story altogether.
Me: (((smashing and chopping garlic on the cutting board)))
Mikhail walks in the kitchen.
Mikhail: Mommy buat aper tu?
Me: Mommy cooking, darling.
Mikhail pauses.
Mikhail: Mommy... what you doing? (He says this the way Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S says 'How you doin'?")
Me: (((thinks that the original answer was not satisfactory and thus Mikhail felt the need to ask the same question in English...)))Mommy chopping garlic, sayang.
Mikhail: (for the first time in his life) Why?
I pause. In shock.
Are they supposed to ask the WHYs this early,...at 2 years of age?
I'm not ready with all the answers!!
Me: Uh... Because, I need the garlic to cook.
Mikhail: Why?
Me: Because... the garlic needs to be chopped... and it makes the spaghetti taste nice. And because we all want to eat nice food. (talk about a pathetic response)
Mikhail: Why?
I pause again. And before I can say anything....
Mikhail turns around, opens a drawer, grabs a spoon, marches out of the kitchen and says....
"Sebabbbb, Mikhail hungryyyyy"
