The Other Side of Mikhail

This was the question a friend of mine asked upon visiting this blog. Apparently, I'm a mother guilty of posting only HANDSOME and CUTE photos of my son.

Okay... For your benefit, darling, here are the 'Not-So-Handsome/Cute-Photos' of Little Wan Mikhail.

Like all new parents, we took lots of photos of Mikhail when he was a newborn. And being a newborn, there wasn't much that he did other than eat, sleep and cry.
Nonetheless, we were very much entertained by the various faces he produced for us. Among which were, this one.

Hidden in the piles of albums that preserve Wan's baby pictures, are some photos of him in a dress. A very pretty, flowery red one.
I had a long, belly-aching laugh when I first came across those photos.
I promised myself that I would never dress Mikhail up like a girl but I broke that promise when I wrapped this scarf around his little face.
But hey... a scarf's not as bad as a dress what....

Mikhail can be quite 'buas', meaning hyper.
He'd be kicking around and clapping his hands excitedly while squealing and yapping away and then suddenly... like a remote control button has been pressed, he'd make his 'Serious Face' and be perfectly still....

When he was a few months old, Mikhail loved making the 'hoowoahh' sound.
Go ahead, try and say that out loud... HOOWOAH...
It was his way of calling attention to himself.
And that he did, especially when he does it with this face...

I always say that Mikhail is not gemuk/debab/lebar but he's just 'Chubby'.
It's hard for me to win this argument when he does faces like this one...

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.
What exactly is THIS one saying then?
..... I really don't know what to call this face....


I don't know why, but during my SAHM-days, I had a thing for medical dramas. Sometimes, Mikhail would have to 'teman' Mommy while she watched shows like "House" or "Gray's Anatomy" or even reruns from "E.R."
He usually behaves himself really well by quietly watching the show with me.
But if his behavior says anything about his preference, I guess I should not put high hopes on having a brain surgeon in the family....
He always falls asleep when the surgeon is about to use the scalpel to cut into the patient...
Maybe he can be Dr.Wan Mikhail, the paeditrician instead.
Yawning and scratching his tummy.... like a real pakcik.


Mikhail can get into the weirdest positions.
We've found him trapped with his legs between the bars of his crib.
We've found a bright blue plastic bowl hidden under his diapered-butt.
We've found him covered with the kelambu in his crib because he had been silently pulling the thing inside through the bars.
Mikhail pitching a fit because he couldn't get at his book... How he got it on his butt is still a mystery...


Mikhail doesn't have much hair.
Which worried me because looking at his Mommy and Daddy, he should have LOTS of hair.
But he doesn't.
After he was shaved bald for the aqiqah ceremony, his hair grew very slowly and sparsely...
But now, it's not so bad, he has enough hair for us to style around.
Sort of.
We tried to make a mowhawk... Didn't have much to work with though...


Once, when I was still pregnant with Mikhail, Wan and I entered a lift with a couple and their cute kid. Wan promptly went "Hello handsome boy!" and the Daddy smiled a sad smile and said "Girl la..."
So to avoid gender-confusion, I've always made it a point to dress Mikhail in boy'ish clothes.
But even then, I'd get a couple of people saying "What a pretty little girl you have!" despite him being dressed in blues.
Mikhaillll... you're supposed to be a HANDSOME, MACHO boy!
All those pinks and red around him kinda gives him a 'pretty' aura rather than a 'handsome' one.
